Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes,
our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions, they

We are braver and wiser because they existed,
those strong women and strong men.
We are who we are because they were

The stone on the left was placed by Dr. Wilgus Bach who mistakenly identified her place of birth as Thuringia. This stone was later replaced by other members of the Back family with a larger more detailed stone after her correct place of birth was proven by her father's family Bible. Other mistakes on the first stone were also corrected by the second. These two abandoned stones were retrieved by Hazel Bach Craft and placed at her Memory Hill Museum. She laughed when she told me the story of them being "thrown over the hill" and that she went and got them.

BIG Y TEST RESULTS
BIG Y TEST RESULTS
Six of the participants in the Bach to Back DNA project have results for the comprehensive Big Y 700 test. This test is for SNPs, not STRs, and is more accurate for predicting the time to the ancestor in common. The results suggest an even closer relationship than the paper trail supports. Descendants of Harman Jr., Joseph, and Henry are confirmed to share a paternal ancestor born perhaps as recently as 1837. This means there are even fewer mutations for these descendants than the average for the Big Y database. The Big Y results plus the paper trails to Harman Back Sr. of Culpeper Co VA confirm the ancestor in common.

Two of the six descendants are close relatives so their haplogroup has been further refined to reflect that relationship but still within the same broader haplogroup as the other four descendants. All six are listed in subgroup A1.

https://discover.familytreedna.com/y-dna/E-FT198173/story

In addition, FTDNA now assigns a haplogroup to men who tested with Family Finder. That process added two more men to the family group, both with Letcher Co KY roots. They are listed in subgroup A2 along with a man who only tested Y67, not Big Y. These three are also identified by DNA results to be of the same broader haplogroup as the Big Y testers.

https://www.familytreedna.com/public/Bach_to_Back?iframe=ydna-results-overview

None of the nine men in subgroups A1 and A2 have matches to anyone except the other members of those Back/Back subgroups. They are distinctly different from the descendants of John & Jacob Back of Wayne Co KY who are subgroup J. It is not possible for the two groups to have a common paternal ancestor within the time frame of surnames.

The Big Y test changed the paradigm of Y-SNP testing. Before the Big Y, SNP testing was primarily useful before the advent of surnames; but today, SNPs are useful in determining genetic lines of both closely and distantly related men. SNP markers mutate at a much slower rate than STRs, which makes them more stable for determining relationships. But you need to test millions of locations to find the relevant markers, which is exactly what the Big Y test does.-Family Tree DNA

The underlined phrase means Harman Back owns all of the rights to the property he is selling. "Estate of Inheritance" is a property law term means that the person owns the right for his heirs to inherit the property. It DOES NOT mean that the person selling the property inherited it from someone. The first page of this deed contains language proving the Harman Back selling this property is the same Harman Back who purchased the land form Jacob Holtzclaw in 1748. An Estate of Inheritance is the opposite of a Life Estate which ends at the death of the person and cannot be inherited. See https://dictionary.findlaw.com/definition/estate.html

Y111 test result interpretation
Three descendants of Haman Back Sr. of Culpeper Co VA and Garrard Co KY, one each from Harman Jr., Joseph, and Henry, have received Y111 marker test results. This graphic from their FTDNA accounts shows the likelihood of sharing a common male ancestor within eight generations, which is how far these testers are from Harman Sr. This precise prediction is possible because of the number of markers tested. Those who have tested fewer markers will have a less exact prediction.

1823 Harlan county Kentucky Deed
9 Aug 1823, Harlan County Kentucky Deed Book A, pg 100-101, Andrew Cope to Elizabeth Back for 100 acres on the Poor Fork "tract of land on which above Elizabeth Back now lives." See 1815 tax list for Knox Co KY. Elizabeth Back had been paying taxes on that land since at least 1815. Son Lewis Back was on that 100 acres on the 1811 tax list, next to his brother John Back. The 1812 tax list is unreadable, 1813 & 1814 are not extant. Witnesses to the deed were Elizabeth's son John Back and Catharine Robinson Back.In an era before loan companies and local banks the seller did not deed the land until he had received all of the money agreed upon so deeds were often issued several years after the initial agreement.

1816 Rockingham County VA Deed Book 3 page 250
Proof of relationship of Margaret Huffman Back to Aaron Back. The sellers of this property are identified five times within the deed as “Aaron Back and Elizabeth his wife.” This 1816 deed describes the 1809 sale of 50 acres from John Embry and his wife Elizabeth (Margaret’s daughter) to Margaret Back and Aaron Back dated 10 April 1809. Aaron was unmarried in 1809, marrying Elizabeth Hammer 12 March 1811. The surviving land lists between 1809 and 1816 list “Aaron Back and mother.” Margaret's sister Elizabeth Huffman Back did not move to Rockingham County VA. She moved to SE KY with her sons John, Lewis, and Henry. She is never mentioned in any record in Rockingham County. The only Elizabeth Back found in Rockingham County was clearly identified as Aaron’s wife. *The Rockingham Courthouse suffered fire damage during the Civil War but some damaged deeds were restored. The original burnt copy of this deed is available on FamilySearch, Deed Book 3, page 250.

1830 Census Harlan County KY
1830 Census Harlan County KY
The U.S. census listed only heads of household prior to 1850, with the other household members being just a mark in an age column. It is reasonable to assume that the 80-89 year old woman in the Henry Back household was his mother Elizabeth Hoffman Back born in 1746, who would have been 84 years old that year. The following year, 1831, Henry Back, his wife Susannah, and his near neighbor in this census Samuel Maggard were three of the witnesses when Elizabeth deeded her land to her son Lewis.
