A collection of several trees, some trees are people related to me. Some are research I have done for others.

Male Bef 1749 - 1794  (~ 44 years)

Personal Information    |    Media    |    Notes    |    All

  • Name John Back
    • John is not represented in the Bach to Back DNA Project because it appears there are no living male descendants. He had one son and that son's line has "daughtered out."
    • This John Back was NOT the father of John Back RWS and Jacob Back of Washington County Virginia and Wayne County Kentucky. That was a different John Back. He is in this database under i.d. I445 but is not related to Harman's family, proven by Y DNA tests in the Bach to Back DNA Project at Family Tree DNA.

    John Huffman estate settlement
Madison Co VA Will Book 1 pages 221-225, settlement with heirs of John Huffman, including Henry Back and John Back as the husbands of two of the daughters. Henry Back bought two books from the estate. Was one of them what the Back family calls "The Catechism?" John Huffman carefully worded his will to make provision for two large German Bibles so it would make sense that he would have other religious books.

The late Dr. Wilgus Bach (1887-1936) mistakenly stated in his notes that "Joseph Back" administered the estate of John Back. As this document shows, it was John's wife Margaret Back and John's brother HENRY Back, not someone named Joseph. This mistake was copied by many and has caused many incorrect family trees. Had Dr. Bach not died unexpectedly with his work unfinished, he might have corrected his error in his unpublished notes. The Joseph Back who was the brother of this John Back was married and living in Mercer County Kentucky at the time of the death of John Back and the administration of his estate. Their father Harman Back was also in Mercer County where he had written his own will in 1792.
1794 INCORRECT reference to administration of John's estate. See original record on this page.
1794 INCORRECT reference to administration of John's estate. See original record on this page.
Dr. Wilgus Bach died unexpectedly before he finished his research. His notes were placed in a notebook and donated to the Kentucky Historical Society by his family. Instead of "Joseph Back" as appears in his notes, the original record in Madison County Virginia says Henry Back assisted John's widow Margaret in the administration of the estate. This was likely an innocent error by the person who transcribed Dr. Bach's handwritten notes onto the typewritten page.
    COUSINS, NOT BROTHERS
    COUSINS, NOT BROTHERS
06 Feb 1785 is Henry Back Junior's date of birth, recorded in the catechism book that served as his familyís Bible for recording births and deaths, currently in the archives of the Breathitt County Library, Jackson, Kentucky.

18 June 1785 is Aaronís date of birth, recorded on his tombstone.

Aaron was born just a little over four months after Henry and therefore cannot share the same mother. Henry is the son of Henry Back and Elizabeth Huffman Back. Aaron is the son of John Back and Margaret Huffman Back. They were double first cousins, not brothers. Aaron is not listed with his sisters on the deed disposing of his motherís land because he was just 17 years old at the time.

  • Notes
    • This is not the same John Back who moved to Washington Co VA when his John was 12 years old (John Jr's pension application) which would have been 1772. The father was still living there when John Jr returned from the war in 1780 (Pension # 32103, Fold3 and revwarapps.org) and in 1786 when son "John Back Junr" was on the Washington County Tax List. This John Back and Margaret Back's 1779 deed and other records proves John & Margaret were in Culpeper County during that time period.

See separate listings in this database for John Back Sr (I445) John Back Jr (I25) and Jacob Back (I24) of Washington County Virginia and Wayne County Kentucky.
