Notes - Alfred Back, born 27 December 1806, probably in Virginia. He was raised by his uncle, John Back, and always used the Back name. Alfred married Isabel Caudill, 30 March 1828. She was born 27 September 1809 in Knox County, Kentucky, daughter of William Caudill. Alfred appeared on the Harlan County, Kentucky, tax lists in 1829 and 1831 with some livestock (no lists available for 1830 or 1832), and from 1833 to 1838 with 50 acres of land. He was listed in the Perry County, Kentucky, census in 1840. The Oven Fork Church excluded him in May 1842 for "refusing to hear the church" after he was first censured for "not letting us know the reason for his nonattendance". Alfred appeared on the Breathitt County, Kentucky, tax lists from 1844 through 1860 (none available for 1840 through 1843). He acquired land on Quicksand Creek in the late 1840s and increased it to 200 acres by 1854. Alfred purchased 200 acres of land near the Morgan-Bath County line, 27 October 1856, for $1.50 per acre from Pressley Howard of Montgomery County. This land was in an area which fell in Menifee County, when it became a county, 1 May 1869. Alfred also bought 150 acres, 7 January 1861, for $300 from John,Jeremiah, and his wife Leah Powers. In Menifee County, Alfred and Isabel lived near the Back Cemetery in an area which became known as "Little Breathitt." In addition to farming, Alfred was well-known for his skills as a blacksmith, gunsmith, rock mason and house builder. It was said that he was so skilled with a broad ax that, when building a cabin, he could flatten the sides of the yellow poplar logs so smooth that they looked as if they had been sawed. Likewise, he supposedly could cut the stones and lay chimneys so true that, even though held together only with mud, they generally stood alone for many years after the log cabins rotted down. Alfred died 8 April 1889 at the age of 82. Isabel died 23 November 1895 [on stone], or 25 November 1888. They are buried in the Back Cemetery in Korea, Menifee County, Kentucky.
