Harman Back

-
Name Harman Back - Y DNA tests on male descendants of three of Harman's sons Harman Jr., Joseph, and Henry are a match and can viewed at Bach to Back DNA Project, Family Tree DNA. Because of the rareness of their haplogroup, and the absence (called a deletion) of DNA at DYS425 there is now proof of the relatedness through the all male line of these test participants. https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/bach-to-back/about
- At this time the mother(s) of the sons of Harman Back and his daughter Mary is not proven. He married Anna Marie Hausman in Germany and she and their infant daughter migrated to America. At the end of his life his wife's name was Katherine. It is unknown whether either of these women was the mother of his sons.

Three descendants of Haman Back Sr. of Culpeper Co VA and Garrard Co KY, one each from Harman Jr., Joseph, and Henry, have received Y111 marker test results. This graphic from their FTDNA accounts shows the likelihood of sharing a common male ancestor within eight generations, which is how far these testers are from Harman Sr. This precise prediction is possible because of the number of markers tested. Those who have tested fewer markers will have a less exact prediction.

The Bach to Back DNA Project at Family Tree DNA welcomes more male Back/Bach Y-DNA test subjects. You must be from an all-male Back line, no adoptions, no "Back because unmarried mother was a Back." That is because only males have Y-DNA and they can only pass it down to male children. We have Y-DNA participants from three of the four presumed sons of Harman Back. It is not known if son John Back and wife Margaret Huffman have any living male Back descendants but it appears unlikely. The descendants of the other John Back who moved to Washington County Virginia do not match the descendants of Harman.

by: Dr. B. C. Holtzclaw
Harman Back. He was an appraiser of the estate of John Huffman, father or brother of Henry Huffman, in 1741 (Orange Co. W. B. 1, p. 161); was deeded land by Jacob Holtzclaw in 1748 (Orange Co. D. B. 11, p. 85); and he and his wife Katherine sold the land in 1789 (Culpeper D. B. "P", p. 86). The tax-lists of Culpeper Co. show Harman Back, Jr., and Joseph Bach as probably his sons. John Back and Henry Back, owners of 150 acres apiece in Culpeper in 1779, may have been older sons.
