Notes - Mary Back, daughter of Henry and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Back, was born 1November 1777 in the Robinson River section of Culpeper County, Virginia (now Madison County, Virginia). Her birth is recorded in the English Catechism kept in the family of her older brother, John. According to the records of Dr. Wilgus Bach, Mary's only known child, Alfred (or Alford), was born in what is now Letcher County, Kentucky, at the spring where the Kentucky River begins. If this is true, then Mary must have come to that part of Kentucky before December 1806. However, Alfred gave his birthplace as Virginia for census records. It is possible, then, that Mary actually came to Kentucky after that time. The name of Alfred's father is uncertain. Dr. Bach states that Alfred's father was a Huffman who was lost in the wilderness. Addie Back" also says that Alfred's father was a Huffman "who wouldn't stay over in Kentucky." Other sources indicate that Alfred's father may have been a man named Collier. It is not known if Mary had other children, or when and where she died. She may have been buried near her mother in the Maggard Cemetery in Letcher County, Kentucky, but no marker exists.
