Elizabeth Huffman Back's first two tombstones.
Elizabeth Huffman Back's first two tombstones.
The stone on the left was placed by Dr. Wilgus Bach who identified her place of birth as Thuringia. This stone was later replaced by other members of the Back family with a larger more detailed stone after her correct place of birth was proven by her father's family Bible. Other mistakes on the first stone were also corrected by the second. These two abandoned stones were retrieved by Hazel Bach Craft and placed at her Memory Hill Museum. She laughed when she told me the story of them being "thrown over the hill" and that she went and got them.

The cemetery is across from the old Noctor Post Office, behind the Church, across Quicksand, up the hill. We had quite an adventure, crossing an old swinging bridge and trudging through the brush to take this photo.

Marriage bond from Wilgus Back research
Marriage bond from Wilgus Back research
A thorough search of the marriage bonds of Fayette County revealed bonds for the other children of Harman Jr. but this one was not found. It appears to have gone missing some time after Dr. Wilgus Back recorded this information, in a time before photocopiers. Dr. Back's research notes, Kentucky Historical Society, Martin F. Schmidt Research Library, Frankfort, Kentucky.
